The pregnant woman wears a long robe patterned with red, gold and black circles, her head bowed as if in prayer. At her feet, three women bow their heads as well. A small skull rests against her belly.

A deep olive-gold background, flecked like aged gold leaf, surrounds the figure. She rises in a narrow column through the centre of the square composition, recalling the Byzantine mosaics Klimt saw in Ravenna in 1903. The painting is now held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

More subdued and spiritual than the first version, it suits a bedroom or a restful living room, from a city flat to a bach.
