housing-block-on-concrete-legs-poster
Residential Block on Concrete Legs - Poster

Of all the apartment blocks in our brutalist architecture collection, this one stands on the most unusual legs.

Its upper storeys jut out over chunky, sloping supports, like the feet of some enormous creature. Above, ribbed concrete panels, lines of windows and a handful of repaired frames hint at decades of everyday living. The space beneath the building falls into deep shadow, making the structure seem heavier still.

We’re drawn to photographs that reveal how a building meets the ground. This one hardly seems to touch it. The structure looks as though it’s crouching, ready to get up and walk away.

There’s a raw, faintly melancholic feel to it, well suited to industrial-style interiors, lofts and offices. Against a light-coloured wall, a black frame makes the contrast sharper. The poster comes in several sizes, whether you’re styling a Wellington apartment or a home elsewhere in New Zealand.

Raising buildings on pillars, known as pilotis, was one of modern architecture’s defining ideas. Explore how Le Corbusier’s ideas paved the way for brutalism.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0759/8099/6937/files/housing-block-on-concrete-legs-poster-thumbnail-1539.jpg?v=1791627873
