He was sixty-eight and had hesitated for years, convinced the city was too beautiful to be painted. He stayed more than two months and started some thirty-five canvases, which he finished at Giverny and showed in Paris in 1912. This set brings together three of them: the pink and white Doge’s Palace above the shimmering lagoon, and two palaces of the Grand Canal, the Palazzo da Mula in blue and green and the Palazzo Dario with its marble façade, each with a gondola gliding past.
