ochre-head-figure-and-bouquet-1937-by-henri-matisse-poster
Ochre Head (Figure and Bouquet) (1937) by Henri Matisse - Poster

Is this a woman or a sculpture? Matisse leaves it for us to decide. Painted in 1937, the canvas shows an ochre-toned head with almond-shaped eyes, turned slightly in our direction. Behind it are a grey marble mantel, a blue jug filled with orange flowers and a framed drawing of another face.

The two portraits are what make the composition so intriguing. The outline on the wall and the painted head below seem to respond to one another: one defined by line, the other almost entirely by colour. Red, green and yellow bands anchor the scene, much like strips of tape on a page in a sketchbook.

We’d display it in a living room or reading nook, somewhere to sit and take it in. It sits comfortably alongside the portraits in our Henri Matisse art prints collection, whether in a Wellington villa or a contemporary home elsewhere in Aotearoa. The poster is available in several sizes. Add a frame and you’ll pay for the frame only; framing is free.

Discover how Matisse’s years in Nice influenced interiors like this in our guide to Matisse’s life and work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0759/8099/6937/files/ochre-head-figure-and-bouquet-1937-by-henri-matisse-poster-thumbnail-9848.jpg?v=1791395239
