Before he painted his first sunflower, Van Gogh was already sketching Millet’s peasants in charcoal, exploring how to give scenes of hard work a sense of dignity without sentimentality.

In September 1889, while staying in Saint-Rémy and unable to spend as much time painting outdoors as he wished, he asked Theo to send prints of Millet’s Labours of the Fields. Van Gogh then reworked them in colour, likening himself to a musician interpreting another person’s score. In this scene, a peasant woman in a blue dress and white bonnet leans over the wheat, gathering it into a sheaf. Yellow and ochre brushstrokes fill the surrounding field, beneath a soft green-blue sky.

This is one painter’s tribute to another. Hang it in a kitchen or hallway with rustic details, whether in a city home or a bach. The poster is available in several sizes.
