Their trunks are cut back every few years, prompting a crown of slender, broom-like branches to grow. While living with his parents in Nuenen in 1884, Van Gogh returned to these trees again and again in his drawings and paintings.

In this scene, a line of willows follows a path in late autumn or winter. Bare and knobbly, their shapes have a slightly comic quality. A pale grey-white sky lets through a faint sun, while brown, grey and muted green tones set the mood. This is Van Gogh before colour took centre stage: still finding his way, yet already attuned to the character of trees, which he portrayed almost as people.

Quiet and graphic, this print sits surprisingly well in contemporary interiors with neutral walls, including the relaxed spaces found in many New Zealand homes. It also makes a thoughtful counterpoint to his later work in a gallery wall. Choose from a range of poster sizes.
