rippling-concrete-balconies-poster
Rippling Concrete Balconies - Poster

Concrete is meant to look solid and severe. No one seems to have told this building.

Its balconies bow outwards, tuck back and sweep out again, one storey after another, giving the facade a gentle, rippling movement. Each curved edge picks up a strip of daylight, while the spaces between sink into deep grey. The effect is more like a sound wave than an apartment block.

We like the way the photograph leaves out the horizon. With no sky or street in view, there’s no clue to the building’s height. Instead, your eye follows a simple rhythm: white, shadow, white, shadow. It sits easily alongside abstract art, or above a desk in a Christchurch or Wellington home where you’d like a calm focal point with a little character.

This print is part of our brutalism poster collection, and shows a softer side of the style. It comes in several sizes. Curious about why architects in the 1960s and 70s shaped concrete this way? Our guide to brutalist architecture’s history covers the story.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0759/8099/6937/files/rippling-concrete-balconies-poster-thumbnail-9860.jpg?v=1791629443
