roulins-baby-1888-by-vincent-van-gogh-poster
Roulin's Baby (1888) by Vincent van Gogh - Poster

Marcelle Roulin was just a few months old when Van Gogh painted her in Arles towards the end of 1888. Her father, Joseph, worked for the postal service and was among the painter’s closest friends. Van Gogh went on to paint the entire family: both parents and their three children.

With wide blue eyes, rosy cheeks and her little hands clasped in front of her, Marcelle looks directly at us. A white bonnet frames her face. Broad, gentle brushstrokes fill the background with a soft mint green, keeping all attention on her serious baby expression. Van Gogh clearly cared for her, and it comes through in the portrait.

Gentle and sweet without being overly sugary, this print suits a nursery or a child’s bedroom. It’s available as a poster in several sizes. You can also see her mother, Augustine, in La Berceuse, featured in our collection of Van Gogh portrait posters. It would sit just as comfortably in a Kiwi nursery as in a child’s room elsewhere.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0759/8099/6937/files/roulins-baby-1888-by-vincent-van-gogh-poster-thumbnail-2138.jpg?v=1791028432
