Van Gogh had just arrived with little money and few people willing to sit for him. He turned to himself as a model instead. Over the next two years, he painted more self-portraits than he did throughout the rest of his career.

This is one of his earlier works, and you can see his appearance taking shape in the mirror. His face is carefully modelled in pinks and ochres, with a touch of green beneath the eyes. The background, though, is beginning to shift: swirling greens and blues suggest foliage rather than a wall. His jacket is a pale grey-white, almost unfinished, while a bright blue cravat gives the eye a place to pause.

A thoughtful portrait for a study or library, or among other faces on a gallery wall. Our poster comes in several sizes, with options to suit homes from Auckland to Dunedin.
