A year after painting the humorous version as a student in Antwerp, Van Gogh returned to the skull in Paris in 1887 and approached it more seriously.

Shown in profile against a warm ochre-yellow backdrop, it is painted in browns and greys, with hints of green. The brushwork is relaxed yet considered, giving shape to the cheekbone, eye socket and jawline. There is no candle, hourglass or sense of drama: only the skull, studied with the same care he brought to a pair of boots or a basket of apples. The effect is composed rather than macabre.

For centuries, skulls have appeared in still life painting as a reminder of life’s brevity. This work sits comfortably within that tradition, yet feels strikingly modern. It suits a study, library or eclectic living room, including homes from Auckland to Wellington. The poster is available in several sizes.
