Winter had yet to loosen its grip. Snow covered the fields, and the orchards stood bare. Rather than wait, he did what an impatient gardener might: snapped off an almond twig and placed it in a glass of water to flower indoors.

The result is one of his most delicate paintings. A glass rests on a yellow-green table, with the twig rising above it and a handful of pink and white blossoms. The wall behind is pale blue, crossed horizontally by a single red stripe. He signed the work at the upper left in red, almost like a calligraphic flourish. Japanese prints are a clear influence, from the spare composition and open space to the focus on one small detail.

A modest subject with plenty of charm. It suits a kitchen, entryway or bedside wall, including in a Kiwi home. Several poster sizes are available.
