His whole body leans into the work, his blue shirt and trousers set against a sea of golden straw that covers almost the entire canvas. Just a small patch of turquoise sky remains at the top.

Van Gogh painted this in September 1889, working from a black-and-white print after Millet. Rather than copying every line, he kept the pose and created his own colour palette, using the blue and yellow contrast he had been refining since Arles. Strokes in the straw follow the stems, while those in the clothing trace its folds and the figure’s muscles. You can almost sense the straw rustling.

Bold blues and golds make a striking graphic impression from across the room

A tribute to physical labour and the harvest

Pairs naturally with his Peasant Woman Binding Sheaves

Available as a poster in several sizes.
