Matisse cut the form freehand in 1947, when scissors had all but taken the place of his brushes. Look closely and you’ll notice four small white squares floating among the fronds. They keep the composition from feeling too quiet.

There’s a pleasing simplicity to this design. Just three colours and a single shape, yet your eye keeps moving. Against a pale wall, the red feels warm and graphic. In a bathroom or hallway, it adds a welcome note of colour to otherwise plain walls. It also pairs naturally with other cut-outs in our Henri Matisse poster collection, whether in a Christchurch villa or a Wellington apartment.

The poster comes in several sizes, with or without a frame. Wondering how a painter in his seventies came to work with paper and pins? The story of Matisse’s years with scissors is a good read before you choose your format.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0759/8099/6937/files/white-alga-on-red-and-green-background-1947-by-henri-matisse-poster-thumbnail-1100.jpg?v=1791395147
