Custom Poster Printing in NZ: Where to Turn Your Photo into Wall Art
Most of our best photos never leave the phone. The bach at Christmas, the first swim of the summer, the dog asleep on the deck, the grandparents at the wedding: they get a quick look, then disappear under a thousand screenshots. A custom poster fixes that. Printed big and hung where you walk past it every day, one good photo does more than a whole camera roll.
Finding the right place to print it in New Zealand is less obvious than it sounds. You can walk into a Warehouse Stationery or a Harvey Norman Photo Centre and pick up a poster the next day, order from an online photo company that ships from Auckland or Christchurch, or use a print platform built for templates and collages. Prices for what looks like the same A2 poster range from under $15 to over $70, and the paper, the editing tools and the framing options vary just as much.
We compared eight services that sell custom photo posters to New Zealand shoppers, looking at the editor, what you can add to your photo, the paper, frames, delivery or pickup, and the regular prices shown in NZD on each website in October 2026.
In short: Posterscape is our top pick for a custom poster that looks like proper wall art, printed in New Zealand, with titles, three layouts and a frame that arrives ready to hang. Warehouse Stationery (through Fotofinish) is the cheapest and fastest for a quick print, Harvey Norman Photo Centre is the in-store option with the best photo paper, Snapfish and Optimalprint are the ones for collages and templates, and Diamond Photo suits you if you only want a framed print.
Posterscape publishes this comparison and is included among the services reviewed. Information about other companies is based on details publicly available on their websites. Prices were checked on the New Zealand websites in October 2026 and are regular prices including GST, before promotions; some photo websites only show the price once you start designing. Prices, sizes, delivery times and policies may change. Last updated: October 2026.

How we judged each photo poster service
When you order a custom poster, the image is already yours. What you pay for is the rest: how well the website helps you crop it, add a few words, pick a paper and get it onto the wall without a trip to a framer. So instead of catalogue size or art selection, we looked at:
- The editor: is the preview faithful, can you reframe the photo, and will it warn you if the file is too small?
- Personalisation: can you add a title, names or a date, and do the layouts look designed?
- Paper: is the paper weight and finish stated clearly, and is there a choice?
- Sizes: does the range cover a small frame, a medium size around 50 × 70 cm (or A2) and a large statement size?
- Framing: can you order it framed, and does it arrive ready to hang?
- Pickup and delivery: in-store collection, courier times to the North and South Islands, and shipping straight to someone else as a gift.
- Price transparency: can you see the price, GST included, before you spend ten minutes designing?
For prices, we checked each New Zealand website and noted the regular price of an unframed poster in about 30 × 40 cm, 50 × 70 cm and 70 × 100 cm, or the nearest size on offer (many local services use A3, A2 and A1). We did not order test prints from every company, so this guide reflects what each one offers and shows publicly.
8 places in New Zealand to turn a photo into a poster
None of these services is a bad choice. They are simply built for different jobs: a poster for Saturday's party, a collage for a 21st, a cheap A1 for the flat, or a framed print for the living room.

1. Posterscape: our top pick for a custom poster that looks like wall art
Most photo services print your picture exactly as it is. At Posterscape, we built our custom poster tool the same way we design the rest of our posters: your photo is the starting point, and the layout, the typography and the frame turn it into something you would actually choose for the lounge.
You upload a photo (JPG, PNG, WEBP or the HEIC files iPhones produce, up to 40 MB), choose portrait, landscape or square, then one of 19 sizes from 15 × 20 cm to 70 × 100 cm. Drag the photo to reframe it, zoom, rotate it, and try ten filters, from vivid and golden tones to black and white, noir or sepia. You can add a title and a subtitle in a classic serif or a modern sans-serif font, and choose between three layouts: white borders like a gallery print, the photo across the full page with white text, or a white text box near the bottom.

The three layouts, from left to right: white borders, full page and text box.
Two features save a lot of guesswork. A quality indicator rates your print from excellent to low resolution for the size and zoom you have chosen, so you know before paying whether the photo is sharp enough. And a print colour preview shows how very bright colours will come out on paper, because some neon shades simply cannot be printed as they look on a screen. Your design is kept in your browser for 30 days if you want to come back to it.
Your custom poster is printed to order in New Zealand on 200 gsm FSC-certified paper, matte or semi-gloss. You can order it unframed, in a slim black metal frame, or in a premium white oak or natural oak frame, all with acrylic glazing. Framed posters arrive mounted and ready to hang: you only pay for the frame, the framing itself is free.
An unframed custom poster costs from $29 (15 × 20 cm), $45 in 30 × 40 cm, $62 in 50 × 70 cm and $95 in 70 × 100 cm. In a black metal frame, a 30 × 40 cm poster costs $109; in natural oak, $177. Unframed posters arrive in 3 to 6 business days, framed ones 2 to 5 business days later, and you can enter the recipient's address at checkout to send it as a gift.
Why Posterscape stands out: layouts and typography that look designed, a preview that tells you whether your photo is good enough, real oak frames, local printing and a poster that turns up ready to hang.
Best if you want: one strong photo turned into a framed poster you are proud to hang, or a gift that does not look homemade.
What to keep in mind: one photo per poster (no collages), no A sizes, and no store pickup. If you need a poster tomorrow morning, a Warehouse Stationery or Harvey Norman Photo Centre will be quicker.

2. Harvey Norman Photo Centre
Harvey Norman's Photo Centres are the most photo-focused of the big retail chains. Posters come in A3, 40 × 40, 40 × 50, A2, 40 × 60, 50 × 76, A1 and two panoramic sizes up to 50 × 101 cm, in portrait or landscape, and you can design online, in the app or at the counter.
The important choice is the paper. The premium posters are printed on 270 gsm Fujifilm satin photographic paper and are the ones Harvey Norman recommends for framing: $19 in A3, $49 in A2 and $59 in A1. The 180 gsm standard posters cost $11.99, $23.99 and $27.99 in the same sizes, and an 80 gsm value poster is meant for parties and sale signs, not for the wall. Posters printed in store are usually ready within 24 hours, and pickup is free.
Best if you want: a photo-paper poster you can collect locally, with someone at the counter to check the file.
What to keep in mind: the jump in price between standard and premium paper is steep on large sizes, and you will need to buy a frame separately.

3. Warehouse Stationery (Fotofinish)
Warehouse Stationery is the place many of us already go for school projects and party posters, and it is the cheapest route to a big print. Online orders go through Fotofinish, its photo printing website: A3 for $14, A2 for $17.50, A1 for $23.50 and A0 for $42, with home delivery or pickup at your local store, usually ready within 24 hours (allow 2 to 3 days at busy times). You can use a single photo or a collage, and add text, borders and backgrounds.
Every store also has photo kiosks and a print counter. The in-store price list is slightly higher than Fotofinish online (A2 $19, A1 $25.50), and posters from A2 up are printed on 200 gsm photo satin on a wide-format machine.
Best if you want: a large poster for very little, ready by tomorrow, for a farewell, a 21st or a flat wall.
What to keep in mind: it is a quick print rather than a finished piece, sizes are A sizes only, and framing is up to you.

4. Snapfish NZ
Snapfish has a dedicated New Zealand site with one of the widest poster ranges: A4 to A0, plus photo sizes such as 30 × 40, 40 × 50 and 50 × 75 cm, in glossy or matte. Its strength is design: collage posters, calendar posters and ready-made templates where you drop in photos and add text. Framed posters come in black or white, with or without a white mat, on acid-free photo paper, ready to hang.
On regular prices, a glossy poster costs $19.95 in 30 × 40 cm or A3, $40.95 in A2 or 50 × 75 cm and $57.95 in A1. That is high on paper, but Snapfish runs codes almost all the time (60% off posters when we checked), so nobody should pay full price. Delivery is charged by the size and number of items.
Best if you want: a collage or a template-based design, ideally during a promotion.
What to keep in mind: wait for a code, and check the delivery cost before you get attached to a big order.

5. Diamond Photo
Diamond Photo is a Kiwi photo printer, printing locally since 2008, best known for canvas and photo books. For posters, its answer is the framed print: your photo in a solid pine frame (black, white, natural or oak) with plexiglass and wall mounts, in sizes from 13 × 18 cm to 100 × 100 cm, including 30 × 40, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm. You can keep the photo full size or use templates, backgrounds and collage layouts.
Regular prices for the framed version were $34.17 in 30 × 40 cm, $98.93 in 50 × 70 cm and $154.35 in 70 × 100 cm when we checked, with site-wide discount codes running too. Loose prints stop at 30 × 45 cm, so there is no unframed large poster.
Best if you want: a framed photo print produced in New Zealand, with collage options.
What to keep in mind: if you already own a frame, this is not the service for you, and the frame moulding is fairly slim (20 mm).

6. Photobook Shop
Photobook Shop's photo poster comes in more than 20 sizes, from A4 and 20 × 20 cm all the way to 100 × 150 cm, in portrait, landscape, square and panoramic. The prices are clear and low for big formats: $17 for 30 × 40 cm, $25 for 50 × 75 cm, $29 for A1 and $37 for 75 × 100 cm, plus $9.95 standard or $18.95 express shipping.
The editor offers backgrounds, scrapbook elements and frames, with an advanced mode if you want more freedom. Orders ship within 7 working days, so allow time for the courier on top.
Best if you want: a very large poster at a modest price, in an unusual size.
What to keep in mind: the poster page says little about the paper, and it is not the fastest option.

7. Optimalprint
Optimalprint is a template-first service: hundreds of designs where you add photos and text, advertised as printed in New Zealand, on 170 gsm coated silk paper. The range runs from 13 × 18 cm to A0, and 50 × 70 cm is its most popular poster size.
Its list prices are the highest here: $39.97 for 30 × 40 cm, $73.30 for 50 × 70 cm and $116.63 for 70 × 100 cm. In practice, there is almost always a large discount (70% off posters when we checked), which brings it down to the level of the cheaper services. Compare the total at checkout, not the list price.
Best if you want: a ready-made design with text, quotes or several photos, without design skills.
What to keep in mind: never order at full price, and the paper is lighter than real photo paper.

8. Vistaprint
Vistaprint is better known for business cards and signs, but its wall art posters let you upload a photo or start from collage and quote templates. Including GST, a standard matte poster (180 gsm) costs $13.79 in A3, $22.99 in B2 (50 × 70.7 cm) and $43.69 in B1 (70.7 × 100 cm). Premium 275 gsm gloss is available too.
Delivery costs about $11.49 unless your order is over $75 before GST, and the website shows prices excluding GST by default, so switch the toggle before comparing.
Best if you want: an inexpensive poster for an event, a stall or a party, in a size close to 50 × 70 cm.
What to keep in mind: it is a print service for promotion first, with no framing on the poster page.
Other options worth knowing
- Print Online and local print shops: online print businesses such as Print Online print A2 to A0 posters from your file (A2 from $12.50), with overnight courier. Handy for a sharp, cheap print of a finished design, but they are plan and poster printers, not photo editors, and images fitted to the page can end up with a white border.
- Photo Warehouse: the camera retailer has a lab and an online printing portal for photo prints and enlargements, with pickup at its stores in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Worth a look if you are a keen photographer who already shops there.
- Etsy sellers: independent sellers make personalised pet portraits, star maps or illustrated family posters. Quality depends on the seller, some are overseas (so allow for shipping time), and some listings are digital files you print yourself.
Which one suits your photo?

- Best for very large sizes on a budget: Photobook Shop
- Best for event and party posters: Vistaprint

What does a custom poster cost in NZ?
An unframed custom poster can cost $14 or more than $100 in New Zealand. The gap comes from the paper (80 gsm party paper and 270 gsm photo paper are very different objects), the size, the printing method and how much design work the website does for you. A good rule: the cheaper the poster, the more likely you will be buying and fitting a frame yourself.

| Warehouse Stationery (Fotofinish online) | $14 (A3) | $17.50 (A2) | $23.50 (A1) |

| Diamond Photo | Framed only: $34.17, $98.93 and $154.35 | ||
Two things stand out. Promotions matter a lot at Snapfish and Optimalprint, so their real price is often far below the list price. And once you add a frame, the picture changes: a ready-to-hang framed poster often costs less than a cheap print plus a custom frame from a framer. At Posterscape, a 30 × 40 cm custom poster in a black metal frame costs $109, delivered ready to hang.
Picking a photo that holds up at poster size
The photo matters more than the printer. A soft or noisy picture looks worse when it is blown up, not better.
- Check the pixels: aim for at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side. Any recent smartphone photo is fine for most sizes up to 50 × 70 cm.
- Find the original file: photos sent over Messenger or WhatsApp and screenshots are heavily compressed. Ask for the original, or download it from iCloud or Google Photos.
- Zoom in before you order: faces and eyes should still be crisp at full size on your screen.
- Leave room around the subject: phone photos are usually 3:4, while many posters are 2:3 or 4:5, so keep some space so nothing important is cut off.
- Be careful with very bright colours: fluoro pinks, electric blues and that turquoise water at Abel Tasman can look duller on paper. A print colour preview, where offered, shows the difference before you pay.
For reference, a print looks sharp at normal viewing distance from about 150 to 200 pixels per inch. That works out at roughly 1,800 × 2,400 pixels for 30 × 40 cm and 3,000 × 4,200 pixels for 50 × 70 cm. A good editor warns you when you fall short.

What to write on your poster
A few words turn a photo into a keepsake. Keep it short: a name, a place, a date. A long quote is hard to read from across the room and fights with the image.
- Wedding or anniversary: both first names as the title and the date underneath, for example "Aroha & Sam" and "14 February 2026".
- New baby: the first name, with the date and time of birth, or the weight.
- Pets: the name in big letters and a small line such as "Good boy since 2019".
- Travel and summer holidays: the place and the month, for example "Cathedral Cove, January 2026" or "Lake Tekapo, Easter 2025".
- Family: the family name, or "The bach, summer 2025".
For the layout, white borders suit portraits and black and white photos, white text over the full photo works best when the bottom of the picture is fairly dark and plain, and a white text box keeps a title readable over a busy background like a beach or a crowd.
Framed or unframed?
Unframed is cheaper and makes sense if you already have a frame. In that case, match the size: frames in New Zealand shops are mostly sold in A sizes (A3, A2, A1) and photo sizes like 30 × 40 or 50 × 70 cm, and an A2 poster will not sit properly in a 50 × 70 cm frame without a mat.
Framed saves a trip to the framer and the risk of a frame that does not quite fit, and it makes a better gift because the poster can go on the wall the day it arrives. Black frames sharpen black and white photos and graphic layouts, natural oak warms up landscapes and family pictures, and white oak keeps things light in a bedroom or nursery.
Giving a custom poster (and beating the Christmas rush)
A photo poster is one of the few presents people see every day. It works for weddings and anniversaries, a new baby, a housewarming, a retirement, Mother's Day (second Sunday of May) or Father's Day (first Sunday of September), or to remember a pet.
Christmas in New Zealand lands in the middle of summer, right when couriers are flat out and many businesses close for the holidays. Printed-to-order posters need a few business days to make and deliver, framed ones longer, and rural addresses can take an extra day or two. Aim to order by the end of November, and no later than the first week of December for a framed poster. Most services, Posterscape included, can ship straight to the recipient, which is handy if the family is spread between Auckland, Christchurch and a bach up north. For more ideas, see our Christmas wall decor gift guide.
Custom poster questions from New Zealand
What is the best website for a custom poster in NZ?
Our top pick is Posterscape, for custom photo posters printed in New Zealand that look like wall art: live preview, titles in three layouts, matte or semi-gloss paper and black metal or oak frames delivered ready to hang. Warehouse Stationery (Fotofinish) is better for a cheap print by tomorrow, Harvey Norman Photo Centre for photo paper with store pickup, and Snapfish or Optimalprint for collages and templates.
Where can I print a poster from my phone today or tomorrow in NZ?
Warehouse Stationery has photo kiosks and print counters in every store, and Fotofinish orders for store pickup are usually ready within 24 hours. Harvey Norman Photo Centres print posters in store, usually ready in 24 hours too. Same-day or next-day posters are generally unframed, so they suit events and last-minute needs best.
What is the cheapest place to print a large photo poster in NZ?
Of the services we checked, Warehouse Stationery's Fotofinish website had the lowest regular prices for A sizes, with an A1 poster at $23.50, and Photobook Shop was the cheapest for very large photo sizes, with 75 × 100 cm at $37 plus shipping. Snapfish and Optimalprint can be cheaper during promotions. Remember to budget for a frame if the service does not sell one.
How much does a custom poster cost in New Zealand?
Expect roughly $14 to $60 for an unframed custom poster in common sizes, depending on the service and the paper, and more for template services at list price or for very large formats. Framed posters usually cost $35 to $300 depending on size and frame. At Posterscape, prices start at $29 unframed and $109 for a 30 × 40 cm poster in a black metal frame.
What size is A2 and A1 in centimetres?
A2 is 42 × 59.4 cm and A1 is 59.4 × 84.1 cm. A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm. Many New Zealand print services, including Warehouse Stationery, Harvey Norman and Snapfish, sell posters in A sizes, while photo services and Posterscape also use photo sizes such as 30 × 40, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm. Check that your frame matches the format you order.
Can I add text to a custom poster?
Yes, on most photo services. Posterscape lets you add a title and a subtitle in two fonts and three layouts. Snapfish, Optimalprint, Fotofinish, Diamond Photo, Photobook Shop and Vistaprint offer text in their editors or templates. Pure print shops usually print your file as it is, so you would add the text beforehand.
What resolution do I need for a photo poster?
Aim for at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side, which any recent smartphone delivers. For a sharp result, plan about 1,800 × 2,400 pixels for 30 × 40 cm and 3,000 × 4,200 pixels for 50 × 70 cm. Avoid screenshots and photos sent through messaging apps, which are compressed.
Matte or glossy paper for a photo poster?
Matte paper has no glare and suits portraits, black and white photos and rooms with lots of sun. Glossy or semi-gloss paper gives richer colours and suits landscapes and travel photos, but reflects more light, especially behind glazing.
Can I order a custom poster already framed in NZ?
Yes. Posterscape delivers custom posters framed and ready to hang, in black metal, white oak or natural oak, printed in New Zealand. Diamond Photo and Snapfish also sell framed photo prints. Warehouse Stationery, Harvey Norman, Photobook Shop and Vistaprint sell their posters unframed.
Can I return a custom poster?
Personalised products are made to order, so most services do not take returns for a change of mind. They will normally reprint or refund a poster that arrives damaged or with a printing fault, in line with the Consumer Guarantees Act. Check the policy before you order.
The bottom line: where should you get your custom poster in NZ?
There is no single best place for every photo. Warehouse Stationery wins on price and speed, Harvey Norman on photo paper at the counter, Snapfish and Optimalprint on templates, Diamond Photo on locally made framed prints, and Photobook Shop on very large sizes.
If you want one photo to become a poster you are proud to hang, with a clean layout, a title that means something and a proper frame, that is exactly what we designed our tool for. You can design your custom poster online in a few minutes and see the result before you order.
