From Street Posters to Icons

Mucha became famous almost overnight in 1895, when his poster for Sarah Bernhardt’s Gismonda appeared on the walls of Paris. Collectors reportedly peeled his posters off the walls or bribed the bill posters to get copies. Within a few years, his style, known simply as “le style Mucha”, was everywhere: on posters, biscuit tins, calendars and champagne labels.

What’s in the Collection

  • Zodiac, originally designed for the Champenois printing house and later used by La Plume magazine.
  • Job, the famous cigarette paper advertisement, with its swirling hair
  • The Seasons, four women representing spring, summer, autumn and winter
  • Salon des Cent, the poster for the group’s 20th exhibition in 1896
  • La Dame aux Camélias, one of his theatre posters for Sarah Bernhardt

Styling Mucha at Home

Mucha's posters are rich in detail, so they need a little breathing room. Give them a plain wall and frame them in natural oak to pick up the warm gold tones in his palette. For more from the period, explore our Art Nouveau and Toulouse-Lautrec collections.
