Baudelaire Exoticism

“There, all is order and beauty, luxury, calm and pleasure.” Our Baudelaire posters illustrate the poet’s dreams of distant shores, from L’Invitation au voyage, Exotic Perfume and To a Lady of Malabar: sunsets over tropical seas, palm trees, drifting ships and lovers on the sand.

Charles Baudelaire’s Invitation to Travel

In Les Fleurs du Mal, published in 1857, Charles Baudelaire returned time and again to the same dream: escaping to a warm, fragrant land where time slows down. Much of this was inspired by his youthful voyage towards the Indian Ocean.

The Poems

  • “Led by your fragrance to those charming climes” comes from Exotic Perfume.
  • “There, all is order and beauty, luxury, calm and voluptuousness” is the famous refrain from Invitation to the Voyage, whose wandering ships drift through another poster.
  • “In the perfumed land caressed by the sun” opens his sonnet To a Creole Lady.

A Series to Hang Together

The eleven posters share the same warm palette of orange skies, deep blue seas and silhouettes, so they work beautifully in pairs or groups of three. Discover more poetry in Visual Poetry and our literature posters.
