Two boots, one turned over to reveal the hobnails on its sole. Their laces spill loose across a blue-grey floor. That’s the entire subject, yet Van Gogh gives it the presence of a portrait.
During his time in Paris, he returned to old footwear several times, buying second-hand boots and, according to some accounts, walking them through the mud before painting them. The leather here is cracked and creased, with warm rust and ochre tones. In the corner, his signature reads Vincent 87. These boots have travelled far, and it shows.
