Not every canvas Van Gogh painted in Arles features sunflowers or a starry sky. In autumn 1888, he turned his attention to what was at his feet: a pair of clogs with leather uppers, like those worn by farm workers in the south.
Set against a warm yellow floor, the clogs are outlined in dark green and slate. Their simple forms look almost carved, while the brushstrokes trace the wood’s grain. Compared with the boots he painted in Paris the year before, this scene feels brighter and more direct. The light of Provence had made its way into the studio.
