Eve stands in the foreground, pale and composed, her long blonde hair falling over her shoulders. Behind her, Adam is darker and asleep, his head resting against hers. A leopard skin and scattered red and blue anemones lie at her feet.
Klimt worked on this among his final canvases. He died in February 1918, leaving the painting unfinished, which accounts for the looser, more sketch-like passages near the bottom. Unlike the gold-toned works of his earlier years, this one feels subdued and intimate. There’s no apple, serpent or garden, just two figures: one awake, the other dreaming.
