In January 1890, Theo van Gogh shared some happy news with his brother: his newborn son, Vincent. Writing from the asylum in Saint-Rémy, the painter replied with this canvas, intended to hang above the new parents’ bed.
Van Gogh chose almond branches as the almond tree is among the first to blossom in Provence, often before winter has fully passed. The flowers stand out against a clear turquoise sky, while the branches sweep across the canvas without a horizon, their outlines inspired by the Japanese prints he admired.
This may be the happiest painting he ever made, and it still brings that feeling to a room. Hang it in a bedroom, a nursery or a living room that could use a little more light. It sits just as naturally in a Kiwi home. We print it as a poster in a range of sizes, with or without a frame. Explore our Van Gogh collection for more flowering branches and orchards, or read about his final years in France to learn more about the context behind this birth announcement.
