Not the famous flowering branches. This almond tree appeared two years earlier, in April 1888, just weeks after Van Gogh made his home in Arles. A young tree stands by itself in a meadow, slender as a stick, with a few pink and white blossoms.
He reached Provence in February and found snow on the ground. By the time the orchards came into flower, he was working quickly, moving from one tree to the next to capture the season before it ended. There’s a charming awkwardness to this one: the trunk tilts slightly, the grass is sketched in short green strokes, and a pale band of sky runs along the top.
Its tall, slim shape is easy to fit between two windows or beside a staircase, including in a compact Kiwi home. The poster is available in several sizes.
