A lone poplar, tall and almost black, rises beneath a sky on the verge of a storm. Heavy clouds gather in shades of grey and violet, while the field below has faded to muted tones. At the base of the tree, a small white chapel, nearly hidden from view, catches the last of the light.
Klimt painted this scene in 1903, during one of his summers at the Attersee in Upper Austria. He often framed landscapes in a square format, which makes the tree seem taller still. There are no figures or narrative, only the stillness just before a storm rolls in.
This work reveals a more sombre side of the artist best known for his gold motifs. It sits comfortably in a study or a living room with dark timber, whether in a city home or a bach. Our Klimt art prints also feature his brighter landscapes. This poster comes in several sizes and can be ordered with a frame.
