Water fills almost the entire canvas. A small, dark island rests in the top right, with just a sliver of pale sky above. Everywhere else, the lake is made up of thousands of little turquoise and lilac marks, catching the light like a warm afternoon on the water.
Klimt spent his summers at Attersee, in the Salzkammergut, from 1900 to 1916. This is among the first paintings he created there, and the approach he would return to for years is already in place: a square canvas, a high horizon and nature rendered almost as a pattern. Some viewers see the influence of Japanese prints. We see a lake that looks inviting for a swim.
With its open, peaceful feel, this print suits a bathroom, bedroom or reading nook. It comes in several sizes, with an optional frame, and sits alongside more lake scenes in our Klimt landscape and portrait prints.
