Pansies were an inexpensive flower in Paris, sold by the basket at street markets. Van Gogh bought plenty of flowers in 1886 and 1887, partly because he couldn’t afford to hire models and partly to hone his eye for colour.
Here, a basket overflows with violet and yellow blooms on a small café-style table. Thick, short brushstrokes give shape to the petals. A muted sage-green wall behind them lends the scene a sense of calm. You can see him exploring how purple and yellow play off one another, a combination he returned to time and again.
- Gentle greens to complement sage or cream walls
- A simple subject that works well in a small room
- Pairs easily with botanical prints
