From 1886, Van Gogh shared a home with his brother Theo in Montmartre, with Boulevard de Clichy along his everyday route. In early 1887, he painted the street beneath a cool, pale-grey sky.
The composition feels spacious. Leafless trees border the footpath, while a handful of people and carriages make their way across the road. Tall apartment buildings recede into the soft, cloudy sky. Lilac, cream, pale blue and pink-tinged stone give the scene a gentle palette. It reflects Van Gogh’s shift away from the darker colours of his Dutch period and his close attention to the Impressionists.
A lovely choice for anyone drawn to Paris who wants something beyond the familiar Eiffel Tower print. It suits an entryway or home office, including the bright, pared-back interiors found in many New Zealand homes. The poster comes in a range of sizes.
