A dozen or so apples sit piled in a yellow dish, which seems almost ready to slip from its pedestal. Matisse painted this in 1916, during the war years, and you can sense him stripping the scene back: the table becomes a red column, the wall a flat expanse of turquoise, while black outlines carry the rest.
The tension is what draws us in. The bowl is oversized, the table leg slender, and somehow it all stays upright. To the left, a striped green-and-white band suggests a curtain or window frame, without giving anything away.
This work feels at home in the kitchen, but it also sits comfortably above a dining room sideboard in a Kiwi home. Explore more still lifes and interiors in our Matisse art prints, from his early canvases to his later paper cut-outs. Pick a size to suit your wall, with or without a frame.
