This is Van Gogh in an experimental phase. In the spring of 1887, he was living in Paris and had just encountered the dotted brushwork of Seurat and Signac. He began testing it on all sorts of subjects, including this table scene.
A tall glass carafe picks up the light in the room. In front, a white plate holds lemons and a couple of oranges. The tablecloth is a deep green, while a patterned cloth behind it is painted in small strokes of pink, orange and blue. There’s plenty happening in the background, but the glass and fruit keep the composition clear and balanced.
We think it works well in a kitchen or dining room with a touch of retro style. There’s colour without anything feeling too bold. The poster is available in several sizes. Browse our Van Gogh still-life and fruit prints to find pieces to pair with it, and read how his time in Paris reshaped his palette in our article.
