In 1913, Klimt did something out of the ordinary: he spent his summer break in Italy rather than Austria. Staying by Lake Garda, he looked across the water and painted Cassone, with its church and houses climbing the hillside.
The scene is wonderfully flat. Walls, roofs and windows become small shapes in grey, cream and terracotta, fitted together like a puzzle. Dark cypress trees rise through the village like exclamation marks, while a band of water along the bottom anchors the composition. The square format Klimt favoured for most of his landscapes gives the village the feel of a tapestry.
