From his bedroom window at the asylum, Van Gogh gazed across a wheat field enclosed by a wall. During the year he lived there, he painted it time and again, through every season. This is the autumn scene: the harvest has been gathered, and a farmer is ploughing the earth.
The furrows are anything but straight. They ripple and twist over the canvas in ochre, mauve and blue, like a restless sea. In the distance, a lone ploughman follows his horses. A soft yellow sun sits in a sky built from short brushstrokes, while trees on the left glow with autumn colour. Hills rise beyond the wall.
