In May 1888, Van Gogh described a small town to his brother, ringed by fields of yellow flowers with purple irises along the front. The scene proved too tempting not to paint.
The composition unfolds in horizontal bands. Irises and their sword-shaped leaves occupy the foreground, with a field of buttercups beyond. A row of trees and Arles rooftops sit beneath a muted green-grey sky. From a little distance, the scene resembles a flag, with stripes of colour running across it.
There’s a sense of openness here. In a living room, the artwork can make the space feel wider; in a bedroom, it has the mood of a spring morning. It’s available as a poster in several sizes, with a frame as an optional extra. Explore more of Van Gogh’s Arles landscapes in our collection, then read our account of his years at the Yellow House.
