In early June 1888, Van Gogh travelled by coach from Arles to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a Mediterranean fishing village where he spent about a week. One morning, before the fishermen set out, he sketched their boats on the beach.
Back in Arles, he developed that sketch into this painting. Four little boats rest on the sand, painted red, green, blue and orange, with their masts crossing beneath a soft, pale sky. A handful of sails are already making their way out to sea. The crisp outlines recall Japanese prints, while the bright, even colours bring to mind sunlit painted timber.
It feels at home in a bathroom, beach bach or child’s room, including in relaxed Kiwi interiors. The poster comes in several sizes. Discover more coastal and rural scenes in our complete Van Gogh poster collection, and read more about his time travelling around Arles in our blog.
