In mid-1888, on the outskirts of Arles, Van Gogh places you in the heart of a flower garden. A path runs diagonally between beds of red, orange, white and blue blooms.
Notice how varied the brushstrokes are: dots for little flowers, dashes for leaves and curls for the shrubs. The scene is almost like an embroidery sampler. At the far end, a low white wall, several trees and dark cypresses frame the view beneath a slim strip of sky. The garden seems to stretch on without end.
We’d hang it in a kitchen, a conservatory or a bedroom in need of a lift. Available as a poster in several sizes, it would sit comfortably in a Kiwi home.
