November 1888. Paul Gauguin had been staying with Van Gogh at the Yellow House for a few weeks, and the two painters were already getting on each other’s nerves. Van Gogh painted two chairs: his own, a simple rush-seated chair with a pipe, and this one for his guest.
Gauguin’s chair is more refined, with curved arms and a palette of green and red. A lit candle and two novels sit on the seat. A gas lamp glows on the wall. Gauguin himself is nowhere to be seen, and that absence is the point: the chair becomes a portrait of a friend, a little grand, a little bookish.
A few weeks later, their falling-out brought the dream of an artists’ house in the south to an end. With that in mind, the painting takes on a different feel. It sits comfortably in a study or library, whether in an Auckland villa or a Wellington home. Several poster sizes are available.
