The first thing you notice is the tablecloth, swirling like a whirlpool. Van Gogh painted it with pale lilac and white strokes that circle the fruit, making this still life feel as if it’s in motion.
On the cloth, he set a bunch of deep purple grapes, a couple of lemons, several pears and red apples, with a curling vine leaf in one corner. This work belongs to a series of fruit paintings he created in Paris in autumn 1887, while exploring the way colours interact. Purple beside yellow, red alongside green: there’s a gentle energy to it all.
Hang it in the kitchen, a breakfast nook or dining room. It fits in without any fuss, whether your home is in Auckland or elsewhere in Aotearoa. The poster is available in several sizes.
