No homes, no people and barely a tree. Just a hillside covered in young wheat beneath a cloud-filled sky. In Auvers in the summer of 1890, Van Gogh pared the landscape back to its essentials, creating a scene that still feels remarkably modern.
Long, flowing strokes of green, yellow-green and blue make the wheat ripple across the canvas like water. Overhead, white and lilac clouds curl in thick layers of paint. A lighter strip of green runs across the right-hand side. You can almost sense the breeze sweeping over the hill.
