A young woman stands side-on, naked and heavily pregnant, her red hair crowned. She looks towards us, composed. In the darkness behind her, faces keep watch: a skull, a pallid figure and a clawed monster.
Klimt painted Hope I in 1903. It was so daring for its time that its first owner kept it out of sight at home. Today, it hangs at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. The subject is simple yet profound: new life on the way, alongside all the fears that come with it. The woman appears unafraid.
A striking choice for a bedroom, its slender format leaves space for a lamp or plant beside it, whether in a Wellington villa or a contemporary Auckland home. It’s available in several sizes, with framing options. Its sequel, Hope II, features in our Klimt art prints and posters.
