Paris is home to thousands of horse chestnut trees. Each spring, white candles of blossom brighten their branches. In 1887, Van Gogh painted one at close range, letting its thick canopy fill almost the entire canvas.
Layers of short, overlapping brushstrokes build up the foliage in shades ranging from olive to blue-green. Pale spikes of blossom appear among the leaves, catching the light.
