Van Gogh painted Irises during his first week at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, in May 1889. He saw work as a lightning rod for his illness and headed straight into the garden.
The canvas is packed with blue-violet irises, their leaves curling like green flames. A lone white iris stands out on the left, prompting questions ever since. Beyond it, a band of orange earth and a bed of marigolds set off the blues. Bold outlines and a closely cropped composition echo the style of Japanese prints.
It fetched a record price at auction in 1987, yet it’s the painting itself that continues to captivate: few flower pictures feel so full of life. Available as a poster in several sizes, it makes a lovely addition to a living room, from a characterful Wellington villa to a modern Auckland home.
