A year after painting irises outdoors, Van Gogh turned to flowers arranged indoors. It was May 1890, near the end of his stay at Saint-Rémy, before he left for Auvers. He painted several large still lifes of flowers, including this one.
The bouquet spills from an orange-brown jug against a lemon-yellow background. Van Gogh set out to create the strongest contrast he could: violet against yellow, a classic pairing of complementary colours. Some of the red pigment has faded over time, leaving the flowers bluer than he first intended. They still stand out on the wall.
