Augustine Roulin was married to Joseph, Van Gogh’s friend and the postman in Arles. In this portrait, she holds the cord used to rock a cradle, though the cradle itself is out of view. That gives the painting its title: La Berceuse, meaning a woman who sings a lullaby.
Van Gogh painted several versions over the summer of 1888–89. He pictured them displayed between two sunflower paintings, like a triptych. He also imagined one in a fishing boat’s cabin, where sailors far from home could feel gently rocked and comforted. Pink and white flowers cover the deep-green wallpaper behind Augustine. Her skirt is green, the chair red and her hair orange.
Both bold and tender, this portrait makes a striking choice for a living room or nursery, including in a New Zealand home. Choose from a range of poster sizes. Explore our Van Gogh poster collection for more portraits from Arles, and read about Van Gogh’s friends in Arles in our article.
