Van Gogh had been reading Pierre Loti’s novel Madame Chrysanthème, set in Japan, where a mousmé means a young girl. In July 1888, in Arles, he borrowed the word for this portrait of a local girl, aged about twelve to fourteen.
She sits in a cane chair, wearing a jacket with red and blue stripes and orange buttons, and a skirt dotted with red. In her hand is a small sprig of oleander. The cool, pale green background sets off the patterns. Her expression is serious, with a hint of shyness.
He told his brother that the portrait had taken a whole week to complete, a long time by his standards. It shows in the careful treatment of each texture. Hang it in a bedroom or hallway; it would sit just as naturally in a Kiwi home. We offer it as a poster in a range of sizes.
