June 1889, just beyond the asylum walls. Van Gogh sets up his easel facing the Alpilles, the low mountain range south of Saint-Rémy, and paints the landscape in long, sweeping layers.
In the foreground, a wheat field is already taking on a golden hue. Beyond it, rounded blue-green hills rise, their slopes traced with fields and rows of trees. Huge white clouds gather overhead, thickly painted against a turquoise sky, almost as if they’ve been sculpted.
Unlike the more unsettled views he painted around the same time, this work feels calm, with an almost classical sense of balance. We’d place it in a living room or dining room with enough space to take it in, whether in a New Zealand villa or a contemporary home. It’s available as a poster in several sizes.
