In the summer of 1904, Matisse spent the season in Saint-Tropez. This small canvas captures the bay in the late afternoon. A tall pine divides the scene on the right, while the hills fade to blue in the distance and pink and yellow fill the sky above water with an almost golden sheen.
Take a closer look at the lower left. A small figure sits on the reddish ground, easy to overlook. That’s the source of the title Le Goûter, meaning afternoon snack. Matisse’s short, pure-colour brushstrokes show a technique he was exploring at the time. A year later, critics would dub him a wild beast.
