Mäda is nine. Standing with her feet apart and hands behind her back, she wears a white dress with a garland of flowers at the waist and gazes straight at us. You can almost sense she’d rather be outdoors at play.
Her father, banker Otto Primavesi, was among the Wiener Werkstätte’s key supporters, and Klimt painted several members of the family. Behind Mäda, pink and violet fields are dotted with little flowers and birds; beneath her feet lies a carpet of colourful shapes. The portrait now hangs in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This cheerful, self-assured painting adds a lift to a child’s room, bedroom or living room, whether in a Wellington villa or a modern Auckland home. It’s available in several sizes, with or without a frame. Discover more portraits of children and families in our Klimt prints and posters.
