Light is the focus here. Sunlight filters through the olive trees, leaving pale yellow patches on the earth as blue and lilac shadows curl around them. The orchard floor seems to shimmer.
The trees grow close together, their silvery-green leaves captured in swift, comma-like strokes. A path, or perhaps simply an opening, curves from the lower left into the distance. At the edge of the scene, a few red poppies bring a hint of warmth to the cool palette. Van Gogh painted this work in 1889, during the months he repeatedly returned to the olive groves near the asylum.
