In Provence, farmers plant cypress trees in close rows to shelter their orchards from the mistral. Van Gogh spotted them during his first spring in Arles. In this April 1888 orchard, they form a deep green screen at the back, shielding the blossoming trees.
A reed fence runs across the foreground. Beyond it, fruit trees laden with white and pink blossom stand on pale ground tinged with lilac. The light is bright, with a slight haze; the colours are soft, almost pastel, while the dark cypresses give the scene its structure. The painting holds protection and fragility in balance.
Fresh and restful, it works well in a bedroom or a living room with light walls, including the relaxed interiors found in many New Zealand homes. Available as a poster in several sizes, it sits alongside other orchards from the same weeks in our Van Gogh landscapes and blossom posters.
