Many painters in the 1880s viewed landscapes from afar. Van Gogh took a different approach, crouching to study the ground at his feet. The result is a small canvas covered from edge to edge in blades of grass.
He painted it in Paris during the spring of 1887, likely in a park or on the city’s outskirts. Fine vertical strokes of green, yellow and blue sit side by side, with a handful of tiny pink and white flowers breaking up the pattern. There’s no traditional subject or single focal point. It feels almost abstract, decades before abstraction took hold.
We love its contemporary feel. It works beautifully in a minimalist home, bathroom or compact study, whether in Auckland or elsewhere in Aotearoa. Choose from several poster sizes.
