When Van Gogh settled in Auvers-sur-Oise in May 1890, Theo asked Dr Paul Gachet to look out for him. Gachet was a doctor, an amateur artist and a friend to several Impressionists. The pair struck up a rapport quickly.
Van Gogh portrayed him with his head resting on one hand and his elbow on a red table. He wears a dark blue coat, set against rolling blue hills and sky. A white cap, a pensive expression and a sprig of foxglove in his hand complete the scene. The plant was used in medicine at the time. Van Gogh wrote that he hoped to capture the heartbroken expression of our time.
He painted two versions. One later became, for a time, the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. This poster comes in several sizes and adds a distinctive presence to a study or library, from a character home in Wellington to a bach by the coast.
