A young girl in profile, her hair cut into a neat black bob and a generous white blouse. Nothing more: no jewellery, gold or pattern. The background is nearly bare, with a few light strokes of cream and grey. Loose dabs of white and lilac give shape to the blouse.
Helene was the daughter of Klimt’s brother Ernst, who died in 1892. Gustav became her guardian and painted her in 1898, when she was six. Among his works, this portrait stands out for its tenderness, simplicity and modern restraint. It is held at the Kunstmuseum Bern.
With its soft, pared-back feel, the portrait suits a child’s room, bedroom or light-filled entrance, including in a classic New Zealand home. Choose from several sizes, with or without a frame. Set it alongside the bold colours of Mäda Primavesi from our Klimt art prints and posters.
The painter’s family also features in our story on Klimt’s Vienna.
