Two copper beeches rise from a meadow like flames. Matisse painted them in 1901, well before he was known as a Fauve. You can already sense the urge to break with convention: the trees aren’t truly purple, but a deep, fiery red, applied in thick, brisk strokes.
Cool green grass dotted with yellow flowers surrounds them, while a pale sky shows through the gap between the trees. A dark pine on the left gives the scene added weight. It’s a compact landscape with plenty of energy.
Why it stands out:
- the reds pair beautifully with timber furniture and warm textiles
- it has a seasonal feel without turning into a familiar autumn scene
- it reveals a side of Matisse that many people haven’t come across
